Discovering Ceylon M8: A Taste of Sri Lanka in Newport

Nestled in the vibrant heart of Newport, Ceylon M8, a food stall operated by Sri Lankan natives Saranga Liyanage and Kasun Hewage, has quickly carved a niche for itself. Building upon their earlier successes in Cardiff, the duo has brought a delightful medley of authentic Sri Lankan flavors to this bustling market, offering both residents and visitors an accessible taste of their homeland.

The Journey Behind Ceylon

Saranga’s journey to opening Ceylon M8 is as inspiring as the food he serves. After honing his skills in well-known restaurants like Wagamama, Prezzo, and Asador, Saranga decided to venture out on his own. With academic credentials including a master’s degree in International Business, he aimed to contribute something unique to the culinary landscape. Alongside Kasun, they established Ceylon M8, bringing fresh, healthy cooking to a wider audience.

A Flavorful Experience

During a recent visit, I had the pleasure of sampling three signature dishes: fried rice, chicken koththu, and an avocado milkshake. Each dish showcased not only the culinary skills of Saranga and Kasun but also the rich flavors of Sri Lankan cuisine.

The fried rice was comforting and flavorful—a classic that felt reliably familiar. Although it didn’t steal the show, it certainly had good depth and a clear nod to its Sri Lankan roots, making it a pleasant option for everyday dining.

However, the chicken koththu emerged as the star of the meal. This dish is a feast for the senses, featuring soft, juicy chicken mixed with shredded roti, vibrant vegetables, and an array of spices that delivered just the right amount of heat. Each bite was rich and layered, making it an unforgettable experience that beckoned for a return visit.

The culinary adventure concluded with the avocado milkshake, a bold choice that surprisingly won me over. Creamy and subtly sweet, it bore an uncanny resemblance to a banana milkshake—only greener. Knowing it was freshly made and healthier added an appealing twist to a delightful drink.

Ratings and Future Plans

Ceylon M8 offers a wholesome dining experience, earning a solid 4.5/5 in my book. While they are yet to join the market’s ordering app as they navigate the challenges of being a new business, Saranga and Kasun are more than willing to take orders in person and even deliver food to customers seated in the area. With everything prepared fresh daily, including a variety of curries, they cater to diverse palates with vegan options available alongside Sri Lankan classics.

Just weeks after their launch, Ceylon M8 is already generating five-star reviews. The owners are even in the process of planning a Christmas menu and considering future expansions.

A Call to Food Lovers

For anyone weary of the usual dining options or eager to delve into new flavors, Ceylon M8 offers an exciting escape. With dishes like the unforgettable koththu leading the charge, it’s clear that this culinary venture is set to become a beloved fixture in Newport.
