A Home Away from Home: Sunni Speaks’ Journey in South Africa
American Vegan Chef Sunni Speaks first uncovered the magic of South Africa in 2022 during what was meant to be a brief layover in Johannesburg on her way to Gaborone, Botswana, for a charity event. Little did she know that this layover would spark a deep and lasting connection with the city and its vibrant culture.
An Unexpected Journey Begins
Upon arriving in Johannesburg late in the evening, Sunni initially planned to retreat to her hotel room at the Marriott Protea Hotel and rest. However, a conversation with a friend encouraged her to embrace the night instead. “You’ve got one night in Johannesburg. You have to go out. You have to live it up. You’ve got to party,” her friend insisted. Taking that advice to heart, she ventured out to explore.
Seeking Authentic Experiences
In search of local culture, Sunni approached the hotel staff, declaring, “I want to go out, but I want to go where the locals go. I don’t want any tourist spots.” This desire for authentic experiences rather than curated tourist traps became a guiding principle for her travels. “Sometimes when you go on tours, you end up at very touristy places, and I don’t really like that vibe. I want to feel like I’m part of the culture when I’m in a different place,” she shared.
Exploring Johannesburg’s Nightlife
The hotel staff recommended Emperors Palace, and Sunni was pleasantly surprised by the friendly atmosphere and the warm welcome she received. “I just wanted to see how the party scene was and experience South Africans. I went there, hung out, and had an amazing time. South Africans are so welcoming,” she reminisced.
Her love for the city only grew, and she made sure to return during her stopover on the way back from Botswana for more adventures.
A Journey Through History
On her second visit to Johannesburg, Sunni took the opportunity to learn about South Africa’s troubled past by visiting the Apartheid Museum. As a Black American, the museum’s exhibits struck a profound chord within her, allowing her to connect more deeply with the history of the place she now felt a growing attachment to.
Culinary Discoveries in the City
For any vegan, Johannesburg offers an array of culinary delights. As Sunni prepared to leave South Africa, she was keen to visit a local vegan restaurant. It was then that she discovered The Vegan Chef. Despite arriving close to closing time, the welcoming staff prepared a meal, and Sunni connected with the owner, Chef Sue Gajathar, sharing her aspirations of returning for a kitchen takeover featuring her renowned vegan oxtail dish.
Since then, Swedish Chef has returned to South Africa repeatedly to live out that dream, conducting successful kitchen takeovers at The Vegan Chef.
Highlights of South African Cuisine
Sunni’s culinary explorations didn’t stop with vegan cuisine. During her travels, she discovered incredible dining experiences like a buffet-style restaurant in Soweto. “They do serve meat, but they also have vegetable sides. The cabbage was amazing. The samp was so delicious, I kept asking, ‘Are you sure this doesn’t have meat in it?’” she said, recalling the delightful surprise of the meal.
Recommendations for Visitors
For those looking to immerse themselves in Johannesburg’s culture, Sunni has a few recommendations. One of her favorites is the Lesedi Cultural Village. “I’ve been there twice, and every time the experience feels different. I love the dancing. I love learning history through people,” she noted, adding how that visit allows her to engage with the stories of the Zulu and Sotho people.
Another favorite destination is Maboneng. Sunni describes it as a vibrant part of the city that never sleeps. “By 5 p.m., the music is already playing, and it doesn’t stop until 3 a.m.,” she shared, painting a lively picture of the local nightlife.
Neighborhood Charm and Nature
Sunni has a particular fondness for the neighborhood of Hyde Park. “Aesthetically, I love the way it looks. I love walking around the neighborhood. It’s absolutely amazing,” she explained.
Johannesburg’s green spaces also left a profound impact on her. Though she couldn’t remember the name of the botanical garden she visited, she recalled the vastness and beauty, complete with rare earth minerals, beautiful flowers, and people enjoying picnics amidst the serene atmosphere.
The Musical Spirit of Johannesburg
An amusing observation that Sunni made about Johannesburg is the apparent musical talent of its residents: “I love the fact that everybody can sing here. I’m standing ten toes down on the fact that all South Africans can sing!” Despite her self-proclaimed lack of musical ability, she finds joy in the rich, musical culture surrounding her.
A Lasting Connection
Sunni’s experiences in South Africa have made the country more than just another stop on her travels. “I’ve been to 25 countries, but South Africans are very warm and very welcoming. That’s why I’ve been back so many times. This is my fourth time here. It feels like home, like a second home,” she concludes, a sentiment likely shared by many who find their way to this vibrant and inviting country.
